Is all Botox created equal?
Botox is actually a brand of Botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin is sold in the UK as Botox, Bocouture and Azzalure. Xeomin and Dysport are also available, but are less common.
They all last about the same time, 6 weeks to 3 months, but it will vary between people. Botox and Bocouture are mixed to the same units, but Azzalure has a different unit system called Speywood units. All brands contain albumin so people with allergies must mention this before having a treatment. Some people become immune to Botox over time or it doesn't work on them, because of antibody formation, but this is very rare. Bocouture is the purest form (it also weighs the least) and the least likely to cause reactions such as allergies or for antibodies to develop.
Bocouture is the only product that does not require refrigeration prior to being mixed, so it can be transported at normal temperatures. Botox and Azzalure need to stay in the fridge before and after mixing and need to be transported in cold packaging. If your doctor is not using Bocouture, make sure they have a fridge, to ensure your product's cold chain is not compromised. Mixed product should ideally be used with 24 hours, otherwise it may not be effective anymore.
Bocouture is the ONLY type of botulinum toxin fully licenced in the European Union to treat the forehead, frown and crows feet . Botox and Azzalure are only licenced for crows feet and frown treatments. That means that Botox and Azzalure used in all three areas are used off-licence in the European Union. This means that the product has not been approved by the prevailing regulatory bodies for use in those areas.
The products are packaged as a white powder and mixed with saline to activate. Your physician should tell you which product you are getting as they are slightly different! Beware of very cheap offers, as your product is likely incorrectly mixed to maximise the volume (more saline is added than recommended) but will give you a poor or no result! Unfortunately the mixing of the product is up to the individual Aesthetic practitioner and some unscrupulous people are out there, so be very careful of too good to be true offers!
So like with any brand, it is up to you which one your prefer, but do your research and ask what product you are receiving as not all toxin is the same! If you have any questions about these products please let me know!
